In the forested mountains of Northeast China, where mist lingers between ancient trees and the earth holds the memory of countless seasons, a family has preserved a distinct cultural tradition for generations. This is the story of the Ma family — and the craft that has been passed from parent to child for over a century.
The Ma family's relationship with incense began not as a business, but as a way of life. In a region known for its rich herbal traditions and deep connection to the natural world, the ancestors of the Ma family learned to identify, harvest, and blend wild herbs and aromatic materials according to formulas that had been refined over generations.

The Art of He Xiang (合香)
At the heart of the Ma family tradition lies the ancient craft of He Xiang (合香) — the art of blending natural aromatic ingredients into harmonious, layered fragrances. This tradition dates back over a thousand years in China, where it was practiced in imperial courts, scholarly studios, and religious institutions alike.
A He Xiang blend follows the principle of Jun Chen Zuo Shi (君臣佐使) — a hierarchical composition method where each ingredient plays a specific role: the lead, the support, the assistant, and the guide. When carefully composed, the result is not merely a scent, but a balanced olfactory experience that evolves as it warms against the skin.
Unlike modern perfumes that rely on synthetic fragrances and alcohol bases, He Xiang uses only natural materials — herbs, woods, resins, flowers, and spices. Each ingredient is selected for its aromatic qualities and its place within the seasonal rhythms and elemental patterns observed in Chinese culture for millennia.
How Our Incense Beads Are Made
Every MystEast incense bead is made by hand, using methods that have changed little over the past century. The process is slow, deliberate, and cannot be rushed:
Step 1: Sourcing
Natural herbs, woods, and resins are sourced from trusted suppliers, many of whom have worked with the Ma family for decades. Each batch is inspected for quality and aroma.
Step 2: Grinding
Ingredients are ground into a fine powder by hand, preserving the aromatic oils that give each blend its unique character.
Step 3: Blending
Following ancestral formulas, the powders are carefully blended in specific proportions. The blending process itself is considered a meditative practice.
Step 4: Rolling
The blended powder is mixed with a natural binder and rolled into uniform beads by hand. Each bead is shaped individually, ensuring consistency and quality.
Step 5: Drying
Beads are dried slowly over 3-5 days in a controlled environment. Rapid drying would crack the beads and diminish their fragrance.
Step 6: Stringing
Once fully dried, the beads are strung by hand using traditional knotting techniques, creating pieces that are both beautiful and durable.
The result is a bead that is fragrant throughout — not sprayed on the surface, but embedded in every layer. As you wear the bracelet, your body warmth gently releases the aroma, creating a personal scent that evolves throughout the day.
The Five Elements as Cultural Language
The Ma family tradition also incorporates the Five Elements (五行, Wu Xing) — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — as a cultural framework for understanding balance and harmony. Rather than literal substances, the Five Elements describe patterns of change in the natural world: growth, warmth, stability, clarity, and flow.

Each bracelet takes several days to complete — from blending the aromatic paste, to rolling and drying the beads, to stringing and knotting the final piece.
